I already developed a passion for foreign languages and cultures during secondary school and have later made them my profession. After several years of employment as a translator for the German language, I decided to become a freelancer in order to be able to combine translating and teaching languages. I enjoy working on texts and my attention for details is of great help for terminology work. Beyond the translation work, I am always happy to share my passion for foreign languages with other people. Against this backdrop, I specialised in English courses for children since they are the most passionate learners.

Did you know that “translator” and “interpreter” are not protected job titles in Germany? Anybody can work as a translator or interpreter even if they only learned their foreign languages for holiday purposes. Have your documents translated by professionals even if it may seem costly at first glance. After all, you would not have designed your new house by a hobby architect only because it is cheaper. When the beautiful facade begins to crumble, expensive repairs will be necessary. The same is true for unprofessional translations!

There are several ways of finding out whether a translator/interpreter is qualified. A title such as “state-certified translator and interpreter”, “university-trained translator and interpreter” or an “MA in Interpreting and Translating” indicate professional qualification because such a title can only be obtained by passing state examinations or university examinations.

I passed my state examination as a translator and interpreter at the Fremdspracheninstitut der Landeshauptstadt München (Munich's municipal foreign languages institute) in 2008. Afterwards, I spent two years in England to master the subtleties of the English language. During these two years, I also gained a Master’s degree in interpreting and translating at the University of Salford.

You may well ask how a translator comes to have several fields of expertise. The answer is a mix of study, professional experience and personal interest.

• During my translating and interpreting degree course, I selected business/economics as my specialisation area and have since deepened my knowledge of the subject in the course of my professional career.
• Marketing became another focus when I was elected to the board of my professional translators’ association as PR representative in 2015. I have since also applied the knowledge and experience gained in this role to my translation work.
• Education is a subject which matters to me personally. I have built up a second business as a language course provider, and I also enjoy working as a translator in the education sector.

I take part regularly in seminars to stay abreast of current developments and technical jargon in my fields of expertise.

I was publicly appointed and sworn-in as a translator and interpreter for the English language by the district court for Nuremberg-Fuerth in January 2011. This entitles me to do certified translations and to interpret at court and at public authorities.
